About Us

Northern Transportation Company Limited is Northern Canada's oldest and largest Arctic marine operator, and Canada's largest barging company. For more than 70 years we have provided reliable and essential marine transportation services to communities and resources exploration projects along the Mackenzie River in the Northwest Territories and across the Western Arctic, from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska as far east as Taloyoak in Nunavut.

NTCL's large, modern shipyard in Hay River, on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, is home to our fleet of 11 river and ocean tugs and more than 90 barges, used to transport fuel and dry cargo to our Northern customers. Our supply of nearly 1000 containers ensures freight arrives at its destination clean and dry. And from our base in Halifax, our two Arctic Class II supply vessels provide marine support services to Canada's East Coast offshore petroleum industry. NTCL is a licensed whole-saler of petroleum products and can provide landed fuel pricing for industrial and exploration projects. Our support services include marine and shore-based equipment chartering and leasing, marine maintenance and repair, high pressure steel fabrication and machining, electronic sales and service, oil spill containment and clean-up and industrial parts and service.

NTCL is a 100% Inuit-owned company and is a member of the NorTerra Inc. group of companies. NorTerra is owned by the Inuvialuit of the Western Arctic and Nunasi Corporation, on behalf of the Inuit of Nunavut.
